Breakers forward Akil Mitchell has suffered a horrific eye injury during his side's clash with the Cairns Taipans at the North Shore Events Centre tonight.

Mitchell received a poke to the eye early in the fourth quarter, collapsing to the court and suspending the game for 15 minutes while he received treatment.

Supporters and players nearby appeared startled by the incident and, while Sky were careful to avoid showing replays, fans watching the game suggested on social media that Mitchell's eyeball was dislodged from the socket.

With his coaches and players huddled around him, Mitchell was eventually assisted from the court with a towel covering his face, leaving to a rapturous ovation from the NSEC crowd.

We hope Akil makes a speedy recovery.
